OUR VISION

The future vision of the Saugatucket River corridor is one of economic prosperity, historic preservation, environmental protection, recreational access, and sound growth management.  As the town of South Kingstown is pushed toward full development, the river and its lush surroundings will become a parkway oasis and a sustainable source of those assets that support a high quality of life within the densely populated village centers of Wakefield and Peace Dale.  The greenway vision increases the community sense of place and creates value to living and working within the town's population centers.  This vision is smart growth. We call our vision

Coalition members are working to protect water quality, provide access for public enjoyment, and to save scenic vistas from inappropriate residential and commercial development.  Members work to complete the corridor of green space within the Saugatucket watershed from the River's headwaters north and west of Indian Lake to the River's estuary from Marina Park south.

Our volunteers are working to obtain land gifts and conservation easements, to build and maintain walking and biking trails linking recreational sites, to produce maps and trail brochures, and to design small park and overlook areas. Efforts are underway to protect open space and farmland at the River's headwaters, while encouraging appropriate new growth and revitalization within the village centers through which the river flows.
